January 2018 President's Corner

by Jack Klauschie, RCBPREZ

It’s time to Tweet to the world a milestone has been reached.

It’s not record high stock prices, elimination of net neutrality, or another alleged trickle-down tax reform act. No folks. You have suffered under my dubious leadership for a whole year.

What are my remembrances from 2017? I have many, but really only one was completely unexpected.

My daughter expressed interest in learning to ride. As I pondered what wisdom I might offer her, in the misguided, naïve delusion she actually might listen, I reflected on the advice I have gotten from RCB members in my formative, early years, and the track classes I participated in over the years. Here it is:

It’s good to warm up the motor and suspension.

It’s essential to warm up tires. That small contact patch is all there is between smelling flowers or the inside of a hospital.

It’s critically required to warm up your mind and body. Do a short walk, mild exercise or some other physical activity to get the heart moving and joints loosened up. Put personal and work distractions out of your mind. They serve no purpose on a ride. We all love riding, but at the start moderate your excitement, temper your impulses, check your ego, and begin with deliberate care whenever you let out the clutch no matter how familiar the road or confident you may feel.

Once rolling, put all your senses, mind and body into the experience.

It’s advice I hope my daughter may follow.

I plan to do so.

Ride well mi amigos.

Thoughts / Suggestions / Insults / Welcomed / Appreciated

And yes, we ride in rain and during holiday periods although the groups tend to be smaller and the destinations closer by. But through it all, we haven't missed a Wednesday in over two years!

What's better, after breakfast, than a spirited ride through the beautiful NorCal roads we've been blessed with? Except for special events, the rides are generally 2-3 hours in length, cover 100-200 miles, and end with a lunch at some destination. The rides are generally "spirited" but if we get enough participation, we generally add a second, more relaxed-pace group. Clutch out is 9:00AM or when the monthly meeting ends, whichever is later, and ride sheets are usually distributed prior to departure. Please show up with a full tank of gas.

The RCB board of directors meets monthly to review past activities and plan future events. Consideration is given to member interest and cost, and the meeting is open to all.

While the meeting begins at 7:00PM, most of the directors gather earlier to have dinner.

RCB member participation is strongly encouraged.

    (From the Airheads event)

Our 26th year. Bring your Airhead. $80 if you pre-register before 12/31/17. The registration fee goes up to $100 after 12/31/17. Who knows what we will charge at the gate, probably $120-$150, if there are any spaces available. In years past we have given refunds if requested only before we start buying stuff. The cooks need to know for how many they are cooking so don't count on food if you don't pre-register, there is no excuse. Bring your bathing suit. Parking for cars is questionable. We are in the tent only area so no motorhomes, campers or trailers. Be kind to the Rangers, law enforcement, park staff and fellow adventurers.

The annual Whale Ride to the Sea Gull Inn in Mendocino is happening again. This ride is great for couples and this year's ride takes place the second full weekend of March: 3/9 - 11/2018. Rooms are 15% off the Standard rate, Greg Peart leads the ride from the Sacramento area over great roads to the village of Mendocino and The Sea Gull Inn. During the weekend, some go on rides in the area, but most relax, shop, and enjoy the great dining - Oh, and try to spot whales just off the coast! Rooms are blocked for YOU (they all appear reserved but are not), so you can view them online, but you have to CALL (707) 937-5204 to get actually book a room. That way no interlopers get your favorite room. It should be a great ride, as always, so look for more details in Greg's article in an upcoming newsletter, or search the Newsletter archives for past articles on previous year's rides.

The 49er Rally is the BMW Motorcycle Club of Northern California's annual Memorial Day Weekend rally, with 46 years of tradition that predates the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America's (MOA) National Rally. (In fact, the first MOA Rally was held at our 49er Rally!) This is the West's premier BMW Rally!

This year's 49er Rally offers four nights of grassy camping, optional RV camping with water and electrical hook-ups, hot showers,
cold drinks, great food, clinics, speakers, vendor displays, prize giveaways, and the camaraderie of lot of fantastic people from all over! Attendees will also have great local riding opportunities including a Poker Run, a self guided Historical Ride, and self guided GS and road rides. Riders can also sign up for GS adventure riding clinics with Lance Thomas followed by guided rides.

If you are a vendor or speaker (or would like to be) and have questions about the 49er Rally, please click here to email Joe Luthy, the 49er Chair.

    • Round Table Pizza, 9500 Greenback Ln, Folsom, CA 9563

Every year around this time a number of RCB members huddle around a table to plot next year's ride calendar. We'll be looking for a mix of slab and off-road rides, a mix of one day and overnight rides, and a mix of camping and motels rides. We'll also consider other club's activities and try to minimize overlap. In the end, we hope to generate a ride calendar for the coming year..

The meeting starts at 6PM and usually runs for two hours or so. Members propose rides (or rides they would like) and together we try to fit this jigsaw puzzle together. Even if you don't have a ride to propose, it's worth it to stop by just to see how things come together. Hey, it's YOUR club, after all.

RCB picks up the pizza and soft drinks and it's not a bad way to spend a Sunday evening.

    • A & S Motorsports

Our annual Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/etc. party is scheduled for Saturday, December 1st, at A&S starting at 6:00pm. As always, we will start setting up about 5:00 pm once A&S closes for regular customers. We would welcome volunteers to help with set up and clean up. As usual, the Club will be providing turkey and ham and drinks of various sorts. To complete the menu you are requested to bring a dish to share based on the following alphabetic distribution (which has rotated from last year's breakdown):

Those with last names beginning with A-D should bring desserts.
Those with last names beginning with E-K should bring salads.
Those with last names beginning with L-Z should bring side dishes (casseroles, veggies, etc.).

Of course, if there is a dish for which you are locally, regionally, internationally, or intergalactically famous you may bring that in lieu of your assigned item!!

The monthly Club meeting (including elections for club officers and directors) will be held Saturday morning as usual. The monthly raffle will be held during the party.

Past Prez Gordon Olson is the CEIC (Chief Elf in Charge).
